FAQ’S
RATHER THAN ANOTHER ABOUT ME SECTION, I THOUGHT I’D DO A FAQ SECTION.
WITH EACH ANSWER, HOPEFULLY YOU’LL KNOW ME A LITTLE BETTER.
Age - Mid 30’s. Location - Brisbane, Australia. Contact - amjoywriter@gmail.com
I have one soon-to-be-published novel - ‘The Lottery’ - and multiple WIPS.
What was the first novel you finished?
Nanowrimo (2018) birthed the first 50K words of what would later become The Dualed.
How many novels have you written?
I recently completed writing my seventh novel. My current WIP is part of a duology called Eveland.
Where did the ideas for your current novels come from?
My brain is a strange place. What more can I say?
Most of my novels come about the same way - a question that niggles and rattles around in my head for months and slowly gives way to plot, theme, characters and everything else.
I usually start with a question - a ‘what if’ that turns my brain upside down.
Each of my novels has sprung forth from this beginning.
The Lottery - what would the world look like if abortion was mandated as a part of population control?
The Dualed - what would happen if someone was cursed with two soulmate? (+Vampires).
Eveland Duology - would it change the world if women wore their number of sexual partners on their skin?
Do you ever suffer from writer’s block?
Not often, but of course – every writer does. Writers block is nothing to stress about.
Take a walk. Watch a show. Listen to a podcast or audiobook. Fill your creative cup and the words will return.
Are you a Pantser or a Plotter?
Classic pantser.
I rarely plan. This is why my first drafts are such messy, chaotic disasters. But I can’t write to an outline (I’ve tried).
My favourite thing is the start of something new - a blank page only excites me, and I write to explore and discover. The rest comes later during edits.
What does a typical writing day look like?
I’m an early morning writer. My best creative time is between 6AM and 7:30AM.
I rise early, walk my two puppies (Ace and Luffy) and then sit down and create. It is the only uninterrupted time in my day and I protect it with a vengence.
Most difficult part of writing process?
The edits/re-writes.
Without question or contestation. My first drafts are chaotic disasters so I spent a lot more time of figuring out plot holes, character arcs and all the little details than I do writing the first draft.
Favourite books/series?
The list could go on forever.
But my all time favourite books are the Harry Potter Series. This will likely never change.
More recently, I have loved everything written by Leigh Bardugo (especially Ninth House & Hell Bent) and VE Schwab (The invisible Life of Addie LaRue).
If I’m not writing, I am..?
Reading. Travelling. Binge watching my favourite shows - murder docos, anime, Ghibli.
Spending time with my husband and two crazy dogs.
In my own world inside my mind.
Best Writer Advice?
Write.
A lot. Badly. Slowly. With the words pouring out. But the answer is always write.
Writer Life Goal.
Write a banned book. That is all.
Fun Fact?
I do the most boring job in the most interesting industry. Who else do you know that does Occupational Health and Safety in a men’s prison in Australia?
